For right now, we're holding steady. The doctor came by today and told us he is wanting to get Katie off the ventilator by the end of the week. (This is a week earlier than he first said.) He believes that if we can keep the swelling in her airway down, she'll be successful. To do this, he wants to give her 4 doses of steroids to prevent/treat any swelling. He also wants her nipple feeding (instead of tube feeding) within the next few weeks. Once she's breathing and feeding on her own, she'll be able to go home. We're hopeful, but kind of afraid to look too far ahead for right now.
Speaking of feeding, she's been having some gas troubles. She's getting half milk, half formula. We think the formula is what's giving her problems, but they said as long as she's "moving everything through", they won't change anything. When I'm holding her, she'll be sleeping and looking very peaceful, then she'll turn red, scrunch up her face and she'll desat (that means her oxygen saturation level in her blood drops). Then, I'll feel a rumble in her tummy, hear a toot and smell a stink. She'll love reading this part when she's older :-)
My goal is to finish painting her room this week. I'll post pictures once I get it painted and get the border put up.

I am keeping my fingers crossed! We all want her to be able to get rid of the vent. Every day she is looking so much better. I love my "grandma" gift and the card was extra special, too. Stay strong, Jess. You are made of very tough stuff! Love ya,

ReplyDeleteSaying tons of prayers that Katie's off the vent in no time, nipple feeding and headed home before you know it. Can't wait to see the pics of her room!
