Katie only lasted about 8 hours on C-pap. At about 9 tonight, they had to put the breathing tube back in. She was having to work too hard to breathe on her own. We're pretty disappointed about this. We felt like the C-pap let us see the light at the end of the tunnel...if she can move toward breating on her own, then we can work on feeding, then go home. I know setbacks like these are "expected" and "common to babies like these", but that really doesn't help. She's been on a vent. for over a month now. Before they removed the tube, they told us how the ventilators damage the lung tissue over time, and worsen her lung disease. Now she's back on it. I'm tired of only getting to hold her for an hour at a time on some days, and I'm tired of having to see her through a plastic box. I still have not heard her cry, or make any noise. I hate sitting there listening to the alarms go off, because I can't do anything to fix it, yet when I'm not there, I feel guilty. We started working on Katie's room this week in anticipation of her coming home at some point, but now it just upsets me to even see it. I feel pretty useless. I sit up at the hospital all day, I don't really do any housework anymore, and I don't know what I'm going to do to earn money next year. I was hoping to find a "work from home" type of thing, but I either don't have the skills/experience needed, or the Internet stuff is a scam. I'm trying hard to be patient and believe everything will work out, it's just hard sometimes.

Jess--Katie will be coming home. She needs a little more energy stored in her body and a little more meat on her bones. She will be able to get rid of the et tube with a little more time. I know that is not easy to hear, but look how far she has already come! Please try not to get discouraged. Your little girls needs you, and you need her, too.
ReplyDeleteI love you all so much.
Mom
Jessie, that is 8 hours of progress. I know it does not seem that way to you but Katie is a fighter and she will continue to grow and get better. Your family is here for you and we will get through this together.
ReplyDeleteLove. Dad
Jessica,
ReplyDeleteI know how hard it is, believe me. They moved Rayven on and off the different machines several times, but it was always her that decided when it was time to kick it. She was on the vent for 2 months before she went to cpap (she extubated herself and started breathing on her own), but when she was ready, she was ready for good. I believe your Katie will be the same, and your Dad is right, being off the vent stressed her lungs a little and will encourage her growth. This is the time that we just have to accept that the babies' time tables are not our own. Just hang in there with her and keep praying, and don't be afraid to take a day off and get some rest! You remain in our prayers.
All of us at Home Depot are praying for Katie and your family. Katie will get through this and come home as soon as she's ready. You remain in our thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeleteHi Jessie,
