I don't really have a lot to report. We're still just waiting on Katie to grow. I expect that sometime next week we'll try to extubate again. They have been changing up Katie's feedings. She hasn't been putting on weight like they want her to. I'm not entirely sure what she weighs...day before yesterday they said she weighed 4 pounds 4 ounces. Today I asked and the nurse said she weighs 4 pounds 13 ounces. I don't believe she put on 9 ounces in 2 days. She's due to be weighed at her 11:00 touch time tonight, so I'll call back and see what she really weighs. They weigh her in grams, then look at a conversion chart to find pounds and ounces, and I think maybe the nurse looked at the chart wrong.
I've been working with Katie on physical theraphy. Since she's been on the vent. for almost 2 1/2 months now, she hasn't been able to move around like a normal 2 month old would. We're trying to help her stay flexible and develop the muscles she'll need. At first, she didn't like the exercises, but she slept through them today. Everything will be so much easier when she gets rid of that breathing tube. She's extubated herself twice, and I get nervous moving her around a lot. That tube is so little, it's easy for it to slip out of her airway.
I know when I say she's getting physical theraphy, it sounds like something is wrong, but it's not. We're trying to avoid problems in the future. Yesterday, when she was fighting me stretching her arms and legs, I was wondering what it would be like if I were still pregnant. If you've seen her during her alert times, you know how much she wiggles and moves around. I'd probably be hurting about now.
One other thing--we've discovered Katie does NOT like other babies crying. For 2 days, there was a big baby across from us that cried, and cried, and cried. Katie would startle and desat everytime that baby started up. I still can't hear Katie cry, but you can tell by looking at her when she is crying. I hope she keeps it up once she gets home, but she'll start to cry, and in mid-wail, she'll just stop. It's like she changes her mind, or whatever she's upset about just isn't worth crying over. I hope she stays easy-going!

Katie is our angel on Earth. She always looks so peaceful....even when loading a diaper! Once the effort is over, she is right back to her calm self....She definitely didn't like that crying baby....If you remember they moved another baby when Katie was much smaller, b/c it cried and upset her, even then!
ReplyDeleteShe has grown so much. I am amazed that some of the smaller sleepers have little toes all the way to the end of the feet!
About the crying....you never really cried a lot as a baby. When you did, I knew something was wrong. Once the need was taken care of, you were back to your same sweet self....just like Katie!
Love ya!Mom
